1. Case Summary

  • A Taiwanese woman surnamed Wei met a man surnamed Lin through a social networking app.
  • The man paid for and arranged her trip to Thailand in order to gain her trust.
  • He later claimed that he had “delicate gifts and a suitcase for an important client” and asked her to bring them back to Taiwan.
  • On the evening of June 10, the woman arrived at Terminal 1 of Taoyuan International Airport from Thailand.
  • During an X-ray inspection of her checked baggage, customs and airport police officers detected abnormalities.
  • Upon opening the suitcase, officers discovered approximately 12 kilograms of heroin, a Category 1 narcotic drug.
  • The case was referred for investigation and prosecution under Taiwan’s Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act.

2. Common Warning Signs of Romance Scams and Drug Smuggling Traps

  • Meeting someone online and quickly developing an intimate or romantic relationship.
  • Using sweet talk, constant attention, and emotional manipulation to gain trust.
  • Offering to pay for overseas travel, accommodation, or airfare.
  • Asking you to carry “gifts,” “suitcases,” “parcels,” or other unknown items back to Taiwan.
  • Claiming that the items are for an “important client” or “friend” and telling you not to ask questions.
  • Using high rewards, free trips, or a romantic relationship to lower your guard.

3. Three Ways to Protect Yourself

  1. Never carry unknown items across the border for someone else.
    • Whether the person is an online friend, acquaintance, or romantic partner, never carry luggage or packages if you do not know exactly what is inside.
  2. Pack and check your own luggage personally.
    • Before returning to Taiwan, make sure you know exactly what is inside your luggage and prevent anyone from secretly placing prohibited items in it.
  3. Be alert when offered free travel, high rewards, or requests to carry items.
    • If someone tells you “don’t open it,” “don’t ask questions,” or “just bring it back,” refuse immediately.

4. The Legal Consequences Are Severe

  • Transporting Category 1 narcotic drugs is a serious criminal offense.
  • Under Taiwan’s Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act, offenders may face extremely severe criminal penalties.
  • Never allow yourself to become a drug-smuggling courier because of romance, financial rewards, or a moment of carelessness.
  • Do not assume that simply saying “I didn’t know there were drugs inside” will automatically exempt you from legal responsibility.

5. Remember This

You may trust love, but never trust an unknown suitcase.

Don’t let sweet words become a trap that ruins your life!

6. Anti-Drug Reminder
