According to statistics from the Ministry of Education’s Campus Security Center, off-campus traffic accidents are the primary cause of student injuries and fatalities. During the summer vacation, students have a much higher frequency of using transportation due to participating in activities or working part-time. The Campus Security Center specifically reminds everyone that whether you are riding a scooter, a micro-electric two-wheeled vehicle, or a bicycle, you must always put safety first!
1.Riding Two-Wheeled Vehicles: Practice Defensive Driving and Stay Clear of Blind Spots
When riding a scooter or a micro-electric two-wheeled vehicle, you must wear a certified safety helmet (wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle is also highly encouraged). It is strictly prohibited to hold and use mobile phones or related digital devices while driving. When passing through intersections, please practice “Slow down, Look, and Stop.” Never drink and drive, drive when fatigued, or speed. In addition, large vehicles have a wide turning radius and massive blind spots, so you must avoid getting close to or riding parallel to large vehicles.
2.Pedestrian Safety: Focus on the Road and Don’t Be a “Phubber” (Smartphone Addict)
When crossing roads, please obey traffic signals or police directions. Do not use your phone while crossing the street, do not run red lights, and do not arbitrarily climb over guardrails or traffic islands. It is recommended to wear bright or reflective clothing, leave yourself ample time, and choose safe intersections to cross, thereby establishing a “Pedestrians First” culture and good road habits.
3.Strictly Prohibited: Driving/Riding Without a License—Penalties Significantly Increased in 115th Year!
The “Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act” has significantly increased penalties for driving without a license. Unlicensed driving of a car carries a maximum fine of NT$60,000, and a scooter carries a maximum fine of NT$36,000. Vehicles will be impounded on the spot, and the vehicle’s license plate will be suspended for 3 months. If a minor under the age of 18 drives without a license, both the student and their parents (or legal guardians) must attend road traffic safety lectures in addition to paying the fine. Unlicensed driving is not just a legal violation; it is a massive risk to your own life and the lives of others.
Teachers and students are welcome to use the “Campus Traffic Risk Map Section” (https://reurl.cc/9bZo2j) to check accident hotspots around the campus and jointly create a safe traffic environment. Wishing everyone a safe holiday—joyful departures and safe returns home!
